The beginning and the end

Welcome to my very first post. The birth of shitrat, her thoughts, her rants, her loves and her life. Right now I'm posting in between answering questions from a practice exam. The real thing is tonight. Advanced Practical Genetics, its worth 40% and its the final for the paper. I think it should be OK, considering we have only had one test paper given to us to practice on, I'm hoping the problems wont be too hard.

One question is on determining the order of the gene products of cell cycle mutants. Forgive me while i discuss how one can determine this.

Double Mutant Analysis

We have two mutants A and B, and we examine the ability of each to complete the cell cycle in the presence and absence of each other, we can determine how they are related.
Mutant A is defective in process a, and mutant B is defective in process b.

  • When process b cannot occur without the completion of process a, then we can conclude that A and B are dependent on each other in the order of A -> B.
  • When process a cannot occur with out the completion of process b, then we can conclude that A and B are dependent on each other in the order of B -> A.
  • When either A or B can occur with out the completion of the other, we can conclude that A and B are independent of each other such that A and B occur at a similar time in the cell cycle, but in different pathways
  • When neither process a or b can occur in the absence of the other then these steps are likely interdependent such that they are involved in the same step in the same pathway
